State of the Nation ~My Thoughts.
I have absolutely no idea what the policy thrust of the new administration is. Yes, they will "fight corruption", but after that, what else?
Apart from "fighting corruption", we have the same policy confusion that seemed to characterize all previous admins. Not a good sign.
On the issue of deregulation (or not of the downstream sector); the problem is a problem of economic philosophy - market or govt control.
"Science is central to modern life, is at the heart of our culture,...the key to sustainable long-term economic growth" - Royal Society. Nigeria, on the other hand, has an anti-scientific culture.
The culture is not of scientific inquiry but of "come & see, American wonder ".
That means that if we are serious, we can have (7*20,000 = 140,000 bbl/day) in local production within 18 - 20 months.
Delta, Anambra, Imo, Ondo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom & Rivers can do modular refineries (20,000 bbl/day), in 18 months with the right incentives.
That is one reason why a useful version of the PIB needs to be passed ASAP.
I believe in Nigeria's unity, but not the unity of this unitary state.
Oil will be less than of a factor in future and whether we like it or not, we cannot build a unity based on oil like we did in the 1970s.
